Tempurpedic’s proprietary formula is a trade secret known only to a small group of people. TEMPUR material is only made in Tempurpedic production facilities using a proprietary formula and manufacturing process - used exclusively for Tempurpedic branded products including the Swedish Sleep Systems(R) and pillows.

On 6 May 1998, Bob was extended an invitation to attend a press conference in NASA headquarters in Washington, DC, in honour of Tempurpedic. NASA Administrator, Daniel S. Goldin, recognised Tempurpedic for successfully using NASA technology to create economic opportunity and enhance the quality of life for mankind. In return, Tempurpedic presented NASA with its one-millionth Tempurpedic Pillow, which, together with other similar pillows, are currently are set on display at various centers including the NASA Headquarters.

The Tempurpedic Pillow comes with a anti-mite and anti-allergy covers. The covers protect you from harmful allergens such as spores, fungi and dust mites with their allergy-producing excrement. Each cover also includes an air permeable, liquid barrier lining and is zippered for easy removal and washing.

People who use it say mostly the same thing about how it makes them feel. Common comments include “i feel like i’m floating”, “tension just disappears”, “feels amazing” and “i don’t feel the pressure on my lower back as i do on a normal bed”.

Tempur material was originally designed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) after spending millions in research dollars and almost a decade of research. It began after NASA decided to develop a material which could relieve the tremendous G-forces experienced by astronauts during take-offs and landings.

The project was later abandoned by NASA. A small polyurethane manufacturing company serving the Danish furniture market, Dan-Foam, began striving to develop a large-scale manufacturing process for Tempur material. In 1989, two Swedish entrepreneurs, Mikael Magnusson and his stepbrother Dag Landvik, via their multinational foam producing company Fagerdala World Foams, acquired Dan-Foam. The Swedes were able to finalise the Tempur project, and eventually incorporated the material into their product range. The idea was to develop a spongy foam that could mould/contour to the person’s every curve - thus evenly distributing weight by reducing pressure and increasing support to sensitive areas like a person’s back and neck. In 1991, the Tempur pillow and mattress was introduced to Sweden with instant success.

Robert B. Trussel, the founder and CEO of TempurPedic International Inc., met Mikael and Dag through a mutual friend. At Mikael’s house, Trussel was so amazed by the material that he begged for distribution rights in the U.S. Trussel has not looked back, with TempurPedic making millions in revenue, most recently achieving a staggering US$1.1 billion during the 2007 financial year end.
